Plantstogo.com is a group effort originally begun by Gary Matson, Diane Hawthorne, and Winfield Mowder. View of Upcountry Gardens Nursery After the loss of Gary and Winfield, the web site and plant material was acquired by Upcountry Gardens.  The Nursery is owned by Nick Zydycrn and Holly McKay.  We consider ourselves very fortunate to have the opportunity to continue the work of the originators of plantstogo.com and to expand the offering of plants to include the cold hardy, woodland varieties we have been growing since 1993.  Our goal is to offer the quality of plants, service and diversity that we like to find in a mail-order nursery. Upcountry Gardens is located in Shingletown, California - a small mountain community at the foot of MT. Lassen Volcanic National Park.  Situated on an old lumber mill site, the Nursery features the original mill pond, a spring fed creek, and a natural wetlands area. The area is heavily forested in mixed conifers and hardwoods.  Five acres are dedicated to demonstration gardens that are currently being planted.

The climate is typical of the Northern California Cascade Mountain range.  At 3800 feet, our winter temperatures range from the low 20 f to afternoon highs in the 40 f to 50 f range. On rare occasions, we can drop as low as 0 f.  Snow depths seldom exceed two feet.  Our summers warm up to the mid 90 f and, with the exception of an occasional thunder shower, are dry.

By combining the two nurseries,  we are able to offer plants from Mediterranean type climates to plants typical of the mountains and northwest.  The incredibly varied and beautiful vegetation of Northern California is the primary stimulus for the plants we grow.

We are always on the lookout for new plants that can adapt to this varied climate, and would like to hear from you with your suggestions (email us).

We do not limit ourselves to any one category of plant, but choose to enjoy the challenge and excitement of growing a wide variety of interesting and uncommon plants.  The offerings you will find at plantstogo.com are plants that do well for us and ones we feel are good garden plants and, to our knowledge, not commonly available.  We hope you find something you want to try.

The website catalog gives us a great deal of flexibility to add and subtract items. New things are always coming along, and will be listed as soon as we can be certain of their availability. We would like to have a good picture of everything in the catalog. If you would be willing to let us use a photo of yours, please let us know.
