Dicentra formosa Bleeding Heart | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
|
Bleeding Heart has soft bluish green, fern-like foliage to one foot. Unlike the Asian specie, this native spreads freely and keeps it's attractive foliage throughout the summer in moist, shady locations with light purple, drooping flowers.
It appears the Hybridizers are at it, developing all sort of bleeding hearts with huge flowers of unique colors. The problem is that once out of bloom, they are quite unattractive. The native continues it's interest (and blooming) throughout the season and rivals any fern for foliage. Give it room to roam. Mix with Forget-Me-Nots for wonderful spreading effect. |
